Searcher (YAG-4) was laid down on 11 December 1944 under Maritime Commission contract (MC hull E2338) by the J. A. Jones Construction Co. Panama City Fla., as Liberty ship, James W. Wheeler, launched on 23 January 1945; sponsored by Mrs. R. D. Turnage; and

delivered on 5 February 1945 to the Calmar Steamship Co. Reclassified YAGR-4 in August 1954, she was acquired by the Navy from the Maritime Administration on 15 September 1954, renamed Searcher; converted to a radar picket ship at the Charleston Naval Shipyard, Charleston, S.C.; and commissioned on 2 April 1965, Lt. Comdr. James A. Paulick in command.

Searcher departed Charleston, S.C., on 16 May 1966 for Newport R. I., where, after shakedown, she reported for duty with the seaward extension of America's early warning defense system. She reported on station for her first patrol on 5 July 1955. Fitted with sophisticated electronic search and tracking equipment, Searcher could detect, track, and report enemy aircraft at great distances, and control high speed interceptor aircraft in event of attack. She also carried out weather reporting duties during her three-to-four-week-long cruises.

On 13 November 1955, Searcher was damaged by an engine room fire which burned for six and one-half hours before being extinguished with the aid of two other ships. Her patrols were otherwise uneventful. She was reclassified AGR-4 effective 28 September 1958; and, during the Cuban Missile crisis in 1962, she operated at sea for 60 out of 67 days. On 1 July 1965, Searcher was decommissioned, struck from the Navy list and transferred to the Maritime Administration. She was laid up in the Hudson River berthing area of the National Defense Reserve Fleet until sold for scrapping on 7 August 1970 to the North American Smelting Co., Wilmington, Del.

The YAGR-4b is a twin-engined jet VTOL aircraft. Its main method of propulsion and lift are the two large jet engine nacelles on swings on either side of the fuselage. Each engine is independently manoeuvrable and can also be rotated backwards 90 degrees to provide a great amount of forward thrust. Smaller vectored thrusters in the large tail provide control over pitch and yaw.

Heavily armoured, the YAGR-4b can withstand hits from up to 35mm rounds, and is hardened against EMP weapons. It is able to carry up to 4,200 kg of weapons on four under-wing hardpoints, and is also equipped with a 25mm cannon.

The layout of the cockpits is unconventional. The pilot of the aircraft sits in the upper cockpit while the gunner sits in the lower cockpit, allowing the gunner to have greater visibility over the ground to spot and acquire targets more quickly.

Кроме этого нашел интересный список не боевых потерь американского флота с 1946 по 1989ый год.

Статистика следующая - за 15 лет было 918 происшествия на палубе, из них 43 человека погибло, 5 получили полную инвалидность, 42 получили частичную инвалидность и 828 серьезные травмы (серьезной травмой считается пропуск 5 или больше рабочих дней). Из травм основные были переломы, травматические ампутаций, крупные порезы, вывихи, ушибы, сотрясения и ожоги. С 1977го до 86го на 10000 посадок была 51 травма, а с 1987го до 90го только 30 травм. Из них 90% были результатом человеческих ошибок.

A comprehensive review of injuries sustained by personnel working on naval flight decks between January 1977 and December 1991 was conducted using database records maintained at the U.S. Naval Safety Center, Norfolk, VA. Data included all fatalities, permanent total disabilities, permanent partial disabilities, and major injuries resulting in 5 or more lost work days. Injuries were coded using ICD-9-CM codes for analysis. A total of 918 flight deck personnel were reported injured during this 15-yr period, including 43 fatalities, 5 permanent total disabilities, 42 permanent partial disabilities, and 828 major injuries. Of the non-fatalities, a plethora of fractures, traumatic amputations, major lacerations, dislocations, contusions, concussions, burns, crushing injuries, sprains, and strains were reported. Nearly all naval platforms with a flight deck reported an injury. While an average of 51 injuries per 100,000 aircraft recoveries were reported annually on aircraft carriers from 1977-86, a marked reduction to a rate of roughly 30 injuries was observed annually from 1987-90. What makes injuries sustained on the flight deck particularly disconcerting is that over 90% can be attributed to human causal factors.
